Equations Containing Brackets

To solve an equation containing brackets, we may proceed as follows:

Remove the brackets by expanding according to the Distributive Law. Collect the pronumeral terms on the left-hand side of the equation and the numerical terms on the right-hand side of the equation by using the same operation(s) on both sides of the equation. Then solve the equation by applying the same operation to both sides of it.

Example 7

Solve 4(p + 5) = 35 for p.
Solution:

First use the Distributive Law, then subtract 20 from both sides before dividing both sides by 4 to find p = 3 3/4.


Example 8

Solve 14 = 28 + 7(1 - c) for c.
Solution:

Use the Distributive Law, then subtract 14 from both sides, add 7c to both sides and finally divide both sides by 7 to find c = 3.
