Inequalities Containing Fractions

To solve the inequality, clear the denominators by multiplying both sides by the lowest common multiple of the denominators and then apply the rules learned in the previous sections.

Example 33

Solve (x + 2) / 4 - (3x - 2) / 6 < -1 for x.

Solution:

Multiply both sides of the inequality by 12 which is the lowest common multiple of 4 and 6.

Use the Distributive Law and simplify. Then subtract 10 from both sides, divide both sides by -3 and change < into > to find x > 7 1/3.

Therefore, the solution set is {x : x > 7 1/3}.
