Direct proportion (or variation) has applications in areas including travel, science, economics, accounting, business, geography and cooking.


Example 11

If the number of litres of petrol used by a car varies directly as the distance travelled and the car uses 16 litres of petrol on a trip of 80 km, how many litres will it use on a trip of 235 km?

Solution:

Let the number of litres used and the distance travelled in kilometres be denoted by n and d respectively.
