Problem 5.1  Race

In a relay race, the first runner of the team runs one-half of the distance plus one-half of a kilometre; and the second runner reached the finish line after running one-third of the remaining distance plus one-third of a kilometre.  How long was the race?

Problem 5.2  Twice the Sum

Twice the sum of a number and 5 is equal to 11 more than one half of the number . What is the number?

Problem 5.3  Area of the Lawn

Jim mowed 0.3 of the lawn.  He still had 630 m² of the lawn to mow.  What is the total area of the lawn?

Problem 5.4  How Long?

Pump A can empty a swimming pool in 3 hours.  Pump B can empty the pool in 5 hours.  How long does it take both pumps pumping together to empty the pool?

Problem 5.5  How Much?

A can of paint weighs 16 kg.  The same can filled with water weighs 8 kg.  If the paint is three times as heavy as the water, how much does the empty can weigh?

Problem 5.6  Extra Toast

A person can buy two pieces of toast and a cup of tea for $2.40 or one piece of toast and a cup of tea for $1.80.  How much extra would the person pay for the second piece of toast?
