A customer is allowed a discount of 10% on the purchase of a table lamp.  The discount is $7.40.  What is the marked price of the table lamp?

Solution:

Let the marked price of the table lamp be $x.  Now, the discount of $7.40 is equal to 10% of the marked price.

So, the marked price is $74.

Example 23

Solution:

So, his sales amount to $2000.
