Year 7 Interactive Maths - Second Edition

Order of Operations

You have used all of the four basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to evaluate an expression containing whole numbers.

To evaluate an expression containing more than one of these operations, we follow this order of operations as we work through the expression from left to right:

Brackets, then Of, Division and Multiplication, then Addition and Subtraction

Remember:

BODMAS

Note:

After removing any brackets in an expression, work through the expression from left to right applying whichever operation comes first out of:

  • 'of ', 'division' and 'multiplication'
  • 'addition' and 'subtraction'

Alternatively, you may do all:
  • 'of ', 'division' and 'multiplication' together
  • 'addition' and 'subtraction' together

Example 18

Evaluate this expression.
Solution:
Do brackets first, then of, division and multiplication next, then finally do addition and subtraction
