Inverse variation has many applications in science as illustrated in the following example.

Example 15

The force, F, which acts between two magnetic poles varies inversely as the square of the distance, d, between them. If F = 16 when d = 3, find d when F = 9.  Describe your answer in words.

Solution:

Substituting for k in (1) gives:

This is the formula which relates F and d.

So, the distance between the magnetic poles is 4 units.
